Halloween New England has been making the most of the season, from exploring vintage Halloween history and experiencing haunts in a different way to checking out a brand-new Halloween festival! Our latest adventures took us to New Hampshire, Maine, Massachusetts, and Connecticut, with plenty of creativity, spooky atmosphere, and Halloween community along the way.
Heirloom Hallowe’en Exhibit – Woodman Museum Institute – Dover, NH
Halloween New England headed to Dover, New Hampshire, for a step back in time at the Woodman Museum Institute, where we explored an outstanding collection of vintage Halloween treasures curated by Heirloom Hallowe’en. Running through November 22, this special exhibit spans the 1800s through the mid-20th century, showcasing vintage paper decorations, antique costumes, period Jack-o’-lanterns, old Halloween postcards, party games, and other Halloween curiosities.Seeing these pieces of Halloween history up close gave us a new appreciation for how the holiday has evolved in America. Alongside helpful anecdotes about the displays, we learned how changing social customs shaped Halloween traditions and how the availability of materials—from the end of sugar rationing to the growing use of plastic—influenced decorations over the decades. The party games also offered a fascinating glimpse into a time when fate, fortune, and the possibility of romance were popular themes for adult Halloween gatherings.
This special collection inspired learning, reflection, and creativity, making it a fascinating stop for anyone interested in the history of Halloween. The exhibit runs through November 22, so there’s still time to see these remarkable pieces of the holiday’s past for yourself!

A standout part of this visit was seeing how Barrett’s transformed its outdoor attraction into the unsettling Burial Hill Motel, reworking the experience for the season.

The festival also featured a Scare Zone, the Witch-Hunt History exhibit, movie screenings, panels, and celebrity guests connected to familiar Halloween films and television shows.
