Weekly Top Picks for October 10th - Oct 16th, 2019

With the long weekend upon us, there are plenty of activities, attractions, festivals, and events for us all to enjoy day and night. Take full advantage of making this October in New England your most memorable yet!



Massachusetts Halloween Events (full guide)
Every Wednesday through Sunday in October, take a stroll on the Concord Tour Company's very special Ghosts in the Gloaming tour through two cemeteries and part of Monument Square while you listen to tales of hidden rooms, learn of a long-forgotten but gruesome murder, unsolved mysteries, and of course - ghosts! Ghosts in the Gloaming is a twilight tour where you can explore the darker side of Concord's history and tales seldom told.

Thursday, October 10th in North Andover, join the Gravestone Girls for their presentation of "Past the Cemetery Gate, the Graveyard as Genealogical Resource" which invites you to explore cemeteries as a valuable resource for data collection activities! Learn how to 'read' the cemetery for clues and information while using both direct observation and deductive reasoning from objects such as the writing, art, geology and the cemetery landscape to answer questions, create new inquiries and open doors for further detective work. Genealogists welcome!

Frightful Fridays Ghost Stories return to the Gore Mansion in Waltham to kick off your weekend with an evening of spooky tales and haunted activities inside this 1806 mansion at night. The tour lasts one hour and promises to be a fun alternative to the usual gruesome fair.

For a different kind of Halloween craft, this Sunday, Oct 13th in Salem, sign up for the Teacup Mouse Taxidermy Class at Hive & Forge. Nikki Deerest of Lone Fox Taxidermy will walk you through "how to skin, prep, and mount a life-size mouse which will be set in a teacup. We'll be going over all of the details so that you learn the skills you need to start basic taxidermy. This is a great gateway into the world of this unique art form."

Also in Salem on Sunday, is a "Dante's Inferno" Film Screening with Live Score by Maurizio Guarini at the Peabody Essex Museum.
"From its sumptuous mise en scène combined with revolutionary special effects creating imagery that remains shocking by today’s standards, director Giuseppe de Liguoro’s realization of Alighieri’s Hell on screen continues to define fire and brimstone in the public’s imagination to this day." Maurizio Guarini will be performing the score live during the film to make for a very special matinee screening.

Sunday night October 13th at DementedFX Haunted House in Holyoke it is First Responders Night where Police, Firefighters, and EMTs have access to $18 tickets at the door!

Tuesday, October 15th it's Devil's Night at Barrett's Haunted Mansion in Abington, MA where you can brave their one and only evening with physical contact, complete terror, and pure chaos at this limited ticket event. Both haunted attractions will be open during this event and customers must be 16 years of age or older to participate (including parental permission required for those under 18). Advanced tickets are required.

Massachusetts is hosting some pretty excellent horror film screenings and horror film-related events this week. We'll list our top selections but you can always click for the full list of horror film screenings.

Our top screening picks of the bunch include a slew of screenings in Salem and Brookline that should get you grabbing your popcorn and settling in for some scares.
At Cinema Salem on Friday, October 11th, look for a double feature of "Trick r' Treat" 25th Anniversary screening followed by the 1986 version of "Trick or Treat". They'll also be hosting  "The Blair Witch Project" 20th Anniversary screening on Saturday, and a Columbus Day "Critters" Movie Marathon featuring FOUR back-to-back Critters movies on Monday.

The Salem Vistors Center has Friday night back to back screenings of "Frankenstein" (1931) followed by "Bride of Frankenstein" (1935).
At the Coolidge Corner Theatre in Brookline, look for "Blacula" on Friday, October 11th and a midnight Double-Feature of "Frankenstein" and "The Mummy".

Connecticut Halloween Events (full guide)
This Saturday and Monday, October 12th and 14th from noon - 5:00pm take in a less scary (but still very spooky!) Daytime Matinee of Dark Manor Haunted House with the lights on and no actors! The matinees are the perfect opportunity for Halloween fans young and old who are seeking a less-scary but still spooky and immersive haunt experience.

On Saturday, October 13th in New London, Spark Makerspace and Hygienic Art are hosting Pumpkin Pandemonium - a family-friendly afternoon event filled with pumpkin carving, music, and dancing including a series of pumpkin carving competitions. Held at the Hygienic Art Park, you'll also be treated to live music and brick oven pizza from a local food truck.

Halloween at Old New-Gate Prison is coming up on the next two Saturdays - October 12th and 19th - - for you can explore the dark side of Colonial and Revolutionary history inside the 18th-century Old New-Gate Prison & Copper Mine. The museum will be alive with spirits of the past and you should watch out for our prisoners including the famous murderess Thirza Mansfield, and others escaping their graves for these two special nights!

Calling all Harry Potter fans! On Saturday, Oct 13th in Simsbury be sure to get your tickets for a magical evening of Hogwarts at Night for adults! Inside the Victorian Storyteller Cottage, each room will be transformed into the Gryffindor Common Room, The Leaky Cauldron, Ollivander’s Wand Shop, the Potions classroom and more! With wand-making, potion creation, a scavenger hunt, and hors d'oeuvres to boot, advance tickets are required for this one of a kind outing!

Sunday, Tuesday, and Wednesday find a 40th Anniversary screening of "Alien" at a CT movie theatre near you. Locations and screening times will vary.


New Hampshire Halloween Events (full guide)

This weekend is a perfect time to head to Lee, NH where Halloween is in full swing! You can visit Haunted Overload which opens their evening haunted trail for the season on Friday, October 11th complete with actors, scares, haunted mansion, giant scenes, and their famous treetop tall characters built deep in the woods.
In addition to their nightly show, during the day on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday you can also see what their artistry looks like in the daylight. Visit the Haunted Overload Daytime Haunt between 10:00am-5:00pm!

Pumpkin festivals abound in New Hampshire this weekend! Top picks include the weekend-long Pumpkin Festival in Milford on Friday, Saturday and Sunday and Charmingfare Farm's Pumpkin Festival in Candia will be ready for you Saturday through Monday.

On this Saturday, October 12th, Haunted Overload's daytime haunt is co-hosting Howl for the Animals fundraiser for the Pope Memorial Humane Society. Featuring a bouncy house, crafts, raffles and special trick-or-treat through the (non-scary) haunt, this special event is also fido- friendly so be sure to bring your doggie along to enjoy the festivities!

While you are there for the Daytime Haunt / Howl for the Animals, you can enjoy the Halloween Storybook Hayrides at DeMeritt Hill Farm (where Haunted Overload is located) -- a family-friendly event for younger children to enjoy on Saturday and Sunday.

On Saturday you can enjoy the annual "Rocky Horror Picture Show" Screening and Party at The Strand in Dover! Come costumed as your favorite Rocky Horror Picture Show character and partake in Rocky Trivia, Karaoke, and dance the Time Warp, of course! VIP Tickets are available as well.

On Saturday, October 12th in Swanzey is the return of the Monadnock Pumpkin Festival! Admission includes free pumpkin carving, a children’s activity tent, pumpkin bowling, Fright Fest, fireworks, costume parade, L’arping quests, two stages of music, Contra Dance, bonfire, hayrides, towers of carved pumpkins, and more!

Rhode Island Halloween Events (full guide)
It's Children's Fairy Tale Night on Thursday, October 10th at the Roger Williams Zoo where kids can meet and take pictures with their beloved fairy tale characters. Kids are encouraged to wear costumes for this special night and tickets include admission to the Jack O'Lantern Spectacular.

For a historical twist, on Tuesday, October 15th at the Herreshoff Museum in Bristol, you are invited to a special presentation of New England stories and legends of ghost ships and pirates long dead at  "Pirate Ghosts And Phantom Ships Of New England". from Thomas D’Agostino and Arlene Nicholson. will tell tales of Blackbeard, Sandy Gordon, Captain Kidd and the others who once called the region home and phantom ships continue to roam the waters of the New England coast. Some mysteriously abandoned while others vanished never to be seen again, in the physical form anyway. Learn why Marblehead dreads the screeching Lady or who haunts the Isles of Shoals.

Maine Halloween Events (full guide)
All weekend long Damariscotta welcomes visitors from every corner for their annual Pumkinfest and Pumpkin Regatta. With pumpkin dessert contests, pumpkin drops, giant pumpkin parades and more, and pumpkin catapults, and more!
One highlight will be Saturday morning's Zombie 5K and Kids Fun Run takes place but the star of the weekend is sure to the Pumpkin Derby on Sunday where participants paint, decorate, theme-out, and engineer giant 400-700 Lb pumpkins into boats to race one another in the harbor. With two racing categories--motorized and non-motorized, this is always a highlight of the long weekend every year in Maine.

Vermont Halloween Events (full guide)

If you happen to be leaf-peeping in east-central Vermont this weekend, swing through Thetford this Sunday, October 13th to enjoy some family-friendly fun at the annual Pumpkin Festival at Cedar Circle Farm where you can take in food, live music, horse-drawn wagon rides, fun and educational kids’ activities, and pumpkin picking.

On Sunday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, in Essex Junction you can settle in for some sci-fi thrills during the 40th Anniversary screening of "Alien" at the Essex Cinemas.


What has Halloween New England been? Where are we headed?

Last weekend we had busy few nights of Halloween fun across Southeastern New England where we screamed our heads off at Fear Town (Seekonk, MA) and 13th World (Cumberland, RI) and took in a double-header on Sunday with a Graveyard Stroll in Mystic, CT hosted by Seaside Shadows Haunted History Tours and wrapped up with a visit to The Dark Manor Haunted House in Baltic, CT.

For the upcoming Columbus Day Weekend we are venturing back to CT for the full weekend where you might run into us at Legends of Fear (Shelton, CT), Fright Haven (Stratford, CT), Evidence of Evil (Southington, CT), Haunt on Eden (Plantsville, CT) and The Haunted Graveyard (Bristol, CT)
On our way back to MA we hope to stop to see Pumpkintown USA  (South Hadley, MA). What an incredible weekend it was!
