Weekly Top Picks Oct. 13th-20th, 2021

 

We are moving at warp speed toward Halloween and we keep adding more events to our state-by-state Halloween events calendars every day! This week is serving up something for everyone who loves Halloween - we have events to appeal to haunt-goers, scaredy-cats, ghostly tale lovers, Jack-o-Lantern fans. We've got events for folks who want to go out, for folks who prefer to stay home, and events for absolutely everyone in between. 

Don't have your pumpkins yet? Be sure to support a local pumpkin patch from one of the many scenic farms that dot the New England landscape. We love seeing pumpkins popping up on doorsteps everywhere during our travels!

We have dozens more wonderful events listed for this week on our website but our hand-picked state-by-state highlights are listed below.


Spooky-not-Scary Events at Area Haunts


There are two spooky-not-scary walk-throughs at area haunts happening this week which are the perfect experience for Halloween fans who have the spirit of the season but would have no interest in the startles and scares.

The first one up takes place this Thursday, October 14th in Shelton, CT where you're invited to Spooky Nights Halloween Lights at Legends of Fear. This self-guided walk along their 1/2 mile-long wooded trail will feature their haunt house scenery and scenic lights without actors for an evening under the stars. Advance tickets are required and very limited tickets are available.

Also Thursday, October 14th will be Fright Night Lite at Haunted Overload in Lee, NH. Sound, lights, and fog will be in full swing but this is an actor-free, scare-free time as you walk through the wooded trail is lined with treetop-tall handmade creatures, vibrant colorful lighting, and fascinating scenery.  Advance tickets strongly suggested.  

On Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 10:00am-4:00pm is the Daytime Haunt self-guided walk at Haunted Overload. This daytime version is actor-free, scare-free, and sound-off. You'll be glad you made the trip to this event because there is no better way to appreciate the craftsmanship of the stunningly detailed and uber-creative scenery. As with everything, advance tickets are the way to go--and it's only $8!   

Ultra Scary Events at Area Haunt

If you are itching to bring your Halloween adrenaline up five notches, you are in luck with an interesting layer to ramp up your haunt experience in RI.

Did you know that 13th World Haunted Trail in Cumberland, RI offers their Touch-of-Fear add-on upgrade every night they are open? For an extra $5 you can ratchet up your night when you consent to a hands-ON, interactive experience from the haunt actors! Haunt customers who have done this have raved to us there is no other way they'd want to go through from now on. the real question is, how brave are you?


Spooky Stories to Put you in the Halloween Mood

They had us at chocolate cake! This Wednesday, October 13th you won't want to miss the first of two special fireside evenings inside the Thoreau Room at the Colonial Inn in Concord, MA. It is there that you'll find Ghosts in the Gloaming - Fireside Ghost Stories being brought to you by the Concord Tour Company. Rounded out with a serving of chocolate cake, coffee, and tea, this event is sure to be a wonderfully spooky Halloween treat!  Can't make it to this Wednesday's event? There's an encore evening of Ghosts in the Gloaming on Wednesday, October 27th. Advance tickets are a must!

Seaside Shadows Haunted History Tours in Mystic, CT always has a jam-packed October of amazing and unique special events for Halloween fans! Get your tickets now for the Spooky Story Dinner they are hosting at the historic and haunted Daniel Packer Inne next Wednesday, October 20th.
Looking ahead, be sure to check out Seaside Shadows' midnight Paranormal Investigations at Whitehall Burial Ground happening over the last two weekends of the month on Saturday, October 23rd, and Saturday, October 30th. We don't want you to miss out as they sell out every year!

Full Moon Events for the October 20th Hunter's Moon

The full moon in October has many names, the Hunters moon, the Travel Moon, or the Dying Moon. Discover moon lore, poems and stories,at the Full Moon Walk at The Wells Reserve at Laudholm in Wells, ME. If you are in Massachusetts, dress for the weather and go to The Full Moon Hike at Appleton Farms in Ipswich, MA, The Full Moon Hike at Doyle Community Park in Leominster, MA , and The Full Moon Hike at Ward Reservation in Andover, MA.

Still Time to Find a Costume for Halloween Events! 

There are a TON of really excellent costume and makeup events happening in New England this week including SFX Makeup Intensive Course (Milford, CT), the FREE Costume Building Workshop (Portsmouth, NH), the Mini Monster Kidz Workshop (Hartford, CT), the Teen Halloween Makeup Event at the library (Hanover, MA)  We have two special New England costume and makeup supply stores we'd like to recommend for your last-minute costume needs and final details.

Massachusetts Halloween Events (Full Guide)


Where will you find Halloween New England this Friday night? In our car, trembling as we view some very scary movies in a super spooky place. Join us for a double-feature of "Night of the Living Dead" and "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre" Drive-in experience at the Medfield State Hospital, Friday and Saturday, October 15th and 16th. Hosted by the Coolidge Corner Theatre for an outdoor event, this is sure to be an unforgettable horror movie evening!
You are encouraged to arrive early if you would like to walk the grounds of Medfield State Hospital before the film begins at sundown. The film will be projected onto a 40-foot inflatable screen using state-of-the-art equipment.
A portion of the proceeds from these screenings will be utilized for the care and maintenance of Medfield State Hospital, a historic former psychiatric hospital complex in Medfield, MA.

On Thursdays and Sundays feed your inner demon with  Bite & Fright at Barrett's Haunted Mansion
The one-and-only Bite and Fright Deal returns to Barrett's Haunted Mansion in Abington, MA!
Every Thursday and Sunday in October, your $45 will treat you to dinner at the Abington Ale House AND admission to both haunted attractions  Tax and tip are even included.

Did you see The Haunted Speakeasy featured on NECN in their piece on Salem events? We did and it was the Bees Knees! You'll enjoy cocktails and spirits of the era whilst the very best of New England’s Burlesque and Drag performers entertain and bewitch you with spooky performances and thrilling numbers. 
 
For history and supernatural fans looking for an interesting free event, check out Spirits of New England with Dustin Pari
at the Webster Public Library on Monday October 18th.
Dustin Pari's Spirits of New England lecture chronicles some of his favorite New England investigations that he has been a part of. It even touches upon a legend with local roots that has become a worldwide phenomenon. A great bit of local history colored with some chilling tales of the supernatural! 
 
Want to get a head start on your Halloween costume?  Anne Kerrigan of Fabulous Facepainting will be at the Hanover, MA  library to get you started with tips/tricks! Teen Halloween Makeup at Hanover Library is a free event on Tuesday, October 19th in the evening  and this promises to be more than a cutesie facepaint! So come with your spooky and creepy makeup ideas and see what she can do!
This is a Young Adult (ages 12-17) program ONLY.  Pre-register as space limited to 20.

Connecticut Halloween Events (Full Guide)

Another all-ages event happening in downtown New Haven next Wednesday, October 13th is The Corpse Bride as part of the weekly Movies in Pitkin Plaza October series. No advance sign-up is required because it is first-come-first-serve.

Another must-go top pick takes place this Thursday, October 14th in Shelton where you'll find
  Spooky Nights Halloween Lights at Legends of Fear - a self-guided walk along their 1/2 mile-long wooded trail will feature their haunt house scenery and scenic lights without actors for an evening under the stars. 

The light of the moon will still be strong and felt on Friday, October 15th. Come and experience Ghost Boat Tour with Seaside Shadows: "Shoreline Epidemics through the Centuries"
Join Seaside Shadows Haunted History Tours for a frightening night on the Thames River of New London and Groton, CT! Journey in the full moon energy for their only ghost tour of its kind as guests will embark on a journey via boat on the waters of the Thames River.
"Shoreline Epidemics through the Centuries" focuses on the dark and true history of the CT shoreline while you journey through the Thames' macabre past. A variety of diseases once spread through this notable region -- what were they? How did they get here? What spirits did they leave behind?

Brush up on your SFX skills for Halloween when you join The Makeup Curio in Milford, CT on Saturday, October 16th for the  1-Day SFX Makeup Intensive Course! This incredible opportunity for you to learn to transform into a zombie with techniques such as cuts and bruises, hair creation, bald capping, and prosthetic application. Course fee includes a makeup kit including 3rd Degree, bruise wheel, foam latex prosthetics, and more. Proof of Covid vaccination is required upon registration. This is a 16+ event. Be on the lookout for Halloween New England here - we'll be popping in during the afternoon to see these makeup artists at work!

A Classic Zombie film as a play! Night of the Living Dead" A Play in Three Acts is a theatrical performance at The Bradley Playhouse happening Fridays through Sundays, October 15th - 31st in Putnam, CT. Based upon the 1968 American independent horror film by George A. Romero, this version has been adapted for the stage with new scenes by John F. Carroll.


This Saturday and Sunday, October 16th and 17th, The CT Renaissance Faire in Lebanon invites all children in costume to enjoy trick-or-treating around the shire with participating merchants during the afternoon. To top it off there is a Kids Costume Contest for kids and teens ages 15 and under are invited to compete!

Young Zombies have two chances to work on their make-up and building skills. The Monster Kidz Box Workshop "Mini Zombie" is at Connecticut Science Center in  Hartford, CT where kids can sign up to work with celebrity Special FX expert Tyler Green of SyFy’s Face Off to conceptualize, paint, and finish creepy mask designs. Young artists will experience what it’s like to be a creature designer in the SFX makeup industry and learn the ins and outs of local manufacturing by building either a Spooky Bat or a Mini Zombie. Two Workshop options taking place on Saturday, October 16th! Recommended for Ages 8-12. 

Can adorable farm animals be scary? Find out at the Kid-friendly Haunted Walk-through Petting Zoo on Friday and Saturday nights, October 15th and 16th at Flamig Farm in West Simsbury, CT. It ought to be a little scary and a lot of fun at Flamig Farm! Recommended for age 2+.

On Saturday, October 16th, Gallery 53 in Meriden, CT is hosting a Wicked Woods festival all week long and you can kick off with horror short- films at the Wicked Woods: Horror Short Film Fest starting at 7:00pm.


Would you like to dine and indulge your penchant for spooky stories? On Wednesday, October 20th you can do both at Seaside Shadows' Spooky Story Dinner at the Captain Daniel Packer Inne located in Mystic! This special evening will be filled with history and mystery, and a three-course dinner and beverages bursting with spooky fall themes with storytellers regale guests on tales of local lore, legend, and paranormal activity throughout the New England region. 

Return to Gallery 53 on Wednesday, October 20th for Wicked Woods: Exhibit Lecture by Calvin Von Crush where you can spend an evening with Calvin Von Crush as he explores the rich history behind spirit photography and talking boards. His extensive collection is sure to get you in the Halloween spirit as he walks you through each piece on display.

New Hampshire Halloween Events (Full Guide)


This weekend is a perfect time to head to Lee, NH where Halloween is in full swing!
We suggest visiting Haunted Overload which will be open for their Fright Night Lite on Thursday, October 14th. 
The attention to detail is staggering and “Fright Night Lite” allows you to experience all of the sights and sounds of Haunted Overload without having actors to scare you.
Fright Lite is an excellent Halloween event for those who love Halloween atmosphere, would enjoy the feast for the senses that Haunted Overload provides, and would like to dial their evening fun to "slightly spooky never scary".

Join the Pope Memorial Humane Society for their annual Howl for the Animals event at Haunted Overload at DeMeritt Hill Farm this Saturday, October 16th in Lee, NH. This year’s event features crafts, raffles, and more including a special trick-or-treat through the haunt.
Non-scary characters will be on hand to pass out candy and guests are encouraged to come in costume. Before entering the haunt, guests will have the chance to decorate their own trick-or-treat bag. The day haunt is also dog-friendly so be sure to bring every member of your family.
Just $8 per person and all proceeds benefit the Pope Memorial Humane Society.
 
The Strand in Dover, NH offers some fun, family-friendly films this weekend! You'll find an interactive Beetlejuice (don't say that too many times!) screening on Friday, October 15th. Following on its heels the next day - Saturday, October 16th - a The Strand you'll find Disney's Zombies showing on the big screen for all ages.
 
The City of Berlin, NH will warm things up on Saturday, October 16th with one of the best fall festivals around—RiverFire and Zombie ATV Poker Run. Come to “the city that trees built” to catch a full day of fun, ending with some dramatic fires on the river! 
At dusk, the Androscoggin River will be lit up with fires that appear to be floating on the water! The blazes will actually burn on the historic boom piers that dot the river.  For RiverFire, these old piers will be stacked with skids, which when set aflame create a dynamic contrast of light over the dark waters. Take a walk along the bridge and admire the wonderful glowing carved pumpkins on the bridge. RiverFire features fun, family-oriented activities such as Hayrides, Helicopter rides, Costume Parade and much, much more.

Do you need some help on your costume look this season? FREE Costume Building Night at Port City Makerspace in Portsmouth, NH on EVERY remaining Saturday in October from, 5:00pm-8:00pm,
To share the Halloween love every year, Port City Makerspace offers Free Costume-Building Nights to encourage people to go above and beyond for the costume!
Their classroom space and Electronics Lab spaces are open for use during these nights.
Members and volunteers will be around to work on their costumes and help you with yours! If you need help with another part of the shop, they can help you operate the equipment or guide you through the workspaces. Many tools are available for use for guests, like the following: 3D Printers, Cricut Maker, Sewing Machines, Laser Cutter, Hotwire Cutter, and lots of hand tools.  Want to use one of these but don't know how? Just ask!
FREE event but reserve your ticket and space. Suggested donation for these nights is $5, and all donations will go to the Portsmouth Halloween Parade.
 
Do pumpkins make good boats? Find out at the Goffstown Pumpkin Weigh-off and Regatta in Goffstown Saturday and Sunday, October 16th and 17th.
This fun community gathering for every age, the Goffstown Pumpkin Festival, and Regatta is a weekend-long celebration starting with the giant pumpkin weigh-off on Saturday and the hilarious pumpkinboat regatta capping off the weekend on Sunday afternoon.
The regatta is a humorous event where people ride the Piscataquog River in their enormous pumpkins-turned-boats--something you have to see to believe!
Kids games, pie-eating contests, doggie costume contests, pumpkin slingshots, pumpkin cook-offs, food, crafts, and more! Other highlights include the pumpkin catapults, a giant pumpkin drop, pumpkin races, and more. 
 
Learn about the art and artistry of New Hampshire Cemeteries and Gravestones - a virtual event on Wednesday, October 20th. Learn about rubbings, photographs, and slides that illustrate the rich variety of gravestones to be found in our own neighborhoods, but they also tell long-forgotten stories of such historical events as the Great Awakening, the Throat Distemper epidemic, and the American Revolution.
Find out more about these deeply personal works of art and the craftsmen who carved them with Glenn Knoblock, and learn how to read the stone "pages" that give insight into the vast genealogical book of New Hampshire. Sponsored by the Nesmith Library in Windham, NH but the event is held online/virtually so be sure to pre-register so you can access the link!
 

Rhode Island Halloween Events (Full Guide)


Roger Williams Park has three major Halloween events happening on the premises this week!
With advance tickets, you can visit the Jack O'Lantern Spectacular's reimagined and stroll through carved pumpkin and Halloween display which is open 7 nights a week at the Zoo. Even better, they are hosting a series of special event nights over the next two weeks! You'll want to check out Superhero Night at the Jack-O'- Lantern Spectacular on Wednesdays October 13th and 20th where you'll enjoy meeting some of your favorite heroes before going on the pumpkin trail.
Next Tuesday, October 19th it'll be Fairy Tale Fun Night at the Jack-O'-Lantern Spectacular where you will love the fairy tale theme as your family participates in meet & greets with some of their favorite costumed characters before hopping on the pumpkin trail. All events are  6:00–8:00pm and are included in the price of the Jack-o-Lantern Spectacular ticket.

For history buffs with a spooky sense, Saturday, October 16th offers Gone But Not Forgotten: Victorian Mourning Customs at Hearthside House Museum in Lincoln, RI. Household owner Simon Thornton may have died in 1873, but each October Hearthside House keeps his memory alive by presenting 19th century Victorian mourning customs. Experience all of the traditions and superstitions embraced by Victorians, who viewed the pageantry of death as a necessary part of life.
Docents in period mourning attire provide a tour through this extensive exhibit that is displayed in every room of the house.

Vermont Halloween Events (Full Guide)

Start your weekend on Thursday, October 14th with When Objects Talk Back: A Look into Haunted Objects & Paranormal Research in Springfield, VT. Join “The Paranormal Couple” Cody Ray DesBiens & Satori Hawes from Travel Channel’s “Ghost Nation” as they dive deep into the phenomena of Haunted Objects!
As the curators of “The Paranormal Couple’s Haunted Museum of Objects, Oddities, and Curiosities: The Traveling Exhibition”, both Satori and Cody have built up quite the collection of creepy oddities and haunted objects. This library-sponsored event will be held off-site at The Great Hall in Springfield.
 
Connect with your inner gumshoe, true crime-loving self, and head to Burlington on Thursday, October 14th to take in a True Crime Thursdays Tour with Queen City Ghost Walks. This is a tour packed with some of Burlington's most grisly tales told by historian Thea Lewis, author of Wicked Vermont, on a walking tour that recounts some of the Queen City's most infamous murders and misdeeds. This tour meets every Thursday until October 21st. Ages 16 and up due to sensitive subject matter.


Maine Halloween Events (Full Guide)


Start your weekend Friday, October 15th with a Guided “slightly scary and kinda’ creepy” nighttime tour of historic downtown Presque Isle, Maine by lantern light.
Presque Isle Haunted History Lantern Tours are held rain or shine, walking tours need no reservations, Trolley Tours do require reservations.

The truth is out there and on Saturday, October 16th you'll find the 4th annual Parafest Maine in Vassalboro, ME. The Paranormal festival returns in 2021 hosted by paranormal teams G.R.I.M. And C.M.G.H. Enjoy Paranormal Lectures and Workshops all day long. Paranormal investigators, Ufologists, Psychics and Mediums, and Cryptozoologists will all be there.

While you are at Parafest, make sure to see When Objects Talk Back: A Look into Haunted Objects & Paranormal Research. This event is held as part of the programming at Parafest Maine and is included in the Parafest ticket price. On Wednesday, October 20th, moonrise is at 6:08pm, and sunset is at 5:50pm. The October Full Moon was often called the Hunter's Moon, the Travel Moon, or the Dying Moon, as well as other names. Discover moon lore, poems, and stories, at the Full Moon Walk at The Wells Reserve at Laudholm in Wells, ME.  Join a naturalist to watch the sunset from one of the highest points in Wells, then meander to the beach to watch the moon rise. Come experience the Reserve at night, listening for owls and other wildlife.  This is a great family experience for those who can enjoy the quiet.



Plan ahead for your October weekends by checking out haunted attractions on a Sunday night! This weekend there are TWENTY-FOUR haunted attractions open this Sunday, October 17th.

Wednesday, October 13th you will find Barrett's Haunted Mansion is open with their all-darkness special event Night Terrors. Walk through the mansion with nothing but a flashlight.

Thursday, October 14th has four haunted attractions open including Haunted Overload (NH) - Fright Night Lite (full show, no scares) and  Legends of Fear (CT) offers up their first of two Spooky Night Lights On Walk-through  (Lights On, No Actors, No scares)
